The Centenary Community has experienced many hardships over the last semester. From the switch to D-III to the loss of Dean Womack, Fall 2009 has been anything but easy. SGA acknowledges these hardships but also wants to leave them in 2009. Moving forward into 2010 SGA is pledging itself to being better than ever.
At the beginning of this academic year, Centenary students faced a tragedy that ripped through our community when we were forced to accept the passing of our beloved Dean of Students, David Womack. While this loss was one that has affected us on an unequivocal scale, we've been fortunate to have Dennis Taylor, who then only held the title "Director of Career Services," step forward into the large shoes that preceded him by taking on the position as interim Dean.
Are you wondering how you can help Haiti? Centenary graduate Brittney Winn has partnered with Centenary and First Methodist Shreveport in an effort to raise money for relief in Haiti. Winn, who was in Haiti during the time the earthquake hit, was "overwhelmed at how I slept in my bed while thousands, millions sleep on the chaotic, bloody, leveled streets of Haiti. The only place I wanted to be was sleeping outside with them." So we will be sleeping outside.
A book drive is underway at Centenary to raise money for the non-profit group Invisible Children and its program Schools for Schools, an organization designed to bring aid to students in the African country of Uganda. For the past twenty years, the people of northern Uganda have been embroiled in civil war.
Every semester a group of students from around the world come to Centenary's campus. This gives Centenary students and students from abroad the chance to discover different cultures and share their own experiences and traditions with the community. Suet Yu "June" Ng is an international student from Hong Kong.
