New Year, New Semester, New Look!
SGA unveils its new look for 2010
Matthew Wallace, SGA President
Issue date: 1/22/10 Section: Campus/Local
The Centenary Community has experienced many hardships over the last semester. From the switch to D-III to the loss of Dean Womack, Fall 2009 has been anything but easy. SGA acknowledges these hardships but also wants to leave them in 2009. Moving forward into 2010 SGA is pledging itself to being better than ever. We have worked extensively over the past semester to make our offerings to students greater and more valuable.
To kick the year off in style we are officially launching our new logo. We will be sporting this around campus; look for signs which let you know how your student fees are being put to work! Also our Senators will be sporting it on their new polos which they will unveil next Friday during the first official Centenary Friday! Centenary Friday's have been an unofficial tradition for years. On our January 19 meeting we unanimously voted to officially declare every Friday Centenary Fridays. We are asking every student to sport a Centenary Shirt to help build unity on our campus. To encourage participation, SGA will be giving away prizes randomly to students who are participant on Fridays; you won't want to miss out!
This semester we will be continuing our Student Satisfaction days so everyone can benefit from their student fees. These might take the form of free Canes or Humphries or free movie rentals from the SUB kiosk. Another way we are putting your student fees to work is by putting on a weeklong celebration during Homecoming.
This year's theme is Laissez les bon temps rouler! which is French for "Let the good times roll!" Throughout the week we will be having a myriad of events such as a kickoff party, comedian, the ever-popular kickball game, and parade. Big Hat Tom Fields and his Foot Stomping Zydeco Band will return this year for Friday's Gumbo Cook-off and Bonfire!
Something special this year is that there will be two shirts at this year's Homecoming. The general shirt which can be obtained like normal at events and then an all-campus spirit shirt which is exclusive to the women's basketball game at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday!
In addition to these festivities SGA has declared this the Semester of the Student. We are doing everything we can to make Centenary a better place for its most important asset, the students! We will be holding campus-wide forums, reviewing the Student Handbook, restructuring meetings to allow for more student presentations, implementing policies to make funding more fair and equitable, and much, much more! We truly want to be your elected voice!
As always if there is something around campus that you think needs more attention please do not hesitate to contact me or your Senators. I can usually be found in my office next to the mailroom, contacted by phone (869-5023), or via email at mwallace@my.centenary.edu. The Senate and myself look forward to SERVING YOU in 2010!
