On Wednesday, January 20th, on the lawn of Centenary's Gold Dome, tents were being put up and sleeping bags rolled out as both the Centenary and Shreveport community initiated the building of our own tent city, Cite' Lespwa (the city of hope), to represent the hundreds that have emerged throughout Haiti's countryside.
The point is to sleep outside in solidarity with the Haitian people in an effort to raise money for Orphan Relief for the thousands and thousands of children who were already living in disgustingly appalling and unjust conditions, only now heighted after the effects from a 7.0 magnitude earthquake from just over a week ago.
There are two things we are asking from you: to join us, and to raise as much awareness and money as you can from your corner of the world in six days. Our goal is to raise a million dollars for orphan relief. The money can be donated three ways: at the Cite' Lespwa site itself (in front of the Gold Dome), across the street from the Gold Dome in the CLC office in the Smith Building on Centenary's campus, or at First United Methodist Shreveport downtown on Common Street. All checks are made payable to First United Methodist Shreveport FOR orphan relief.
This money directly helps rebuild orphanages that have been leveled or supplies orphanages that are already there with extra food, water, and medical attention that has been greatly needed since the earthquake. Please, if possible, lend your support to our cause.
